Women's day

We don't need ONE women's day,
We need a day to care about women's SAFETY
From being fed ideas about her identity and potential
From molestation, abuse, torture and death.

We don't need ONE women's day
We need a day to INDULGE her RAGE
Her pent-up anger over centuries and generations
To fuel an uprising to restore the balance.

We don't need ONE women's day
We need a day to RECOGNIZE her unique advantages
Evolutionary and honed over thousands of generations
That her male counterparts can do with a little more of.

We don't need ONE women's day
We need a day to CELEBRATE how far she's come
In spite of the cards stacked against her
In a sexist society.

We don't need ONE women's day,
We need a day to FIGHT for women's EQUALITY
In power, authority and responsibility
In representation, grace and compassion.

We don't need ANY women's day
For great will be a day when she can just BE
Existing and thriving, with strengths and contributions,
And weaknesses and failings.

Of newspapers

Got into a lunch discussion about newspapers, more specifically about how we end up paying for newspapers that ultimately land up at the old-newspaper-shop ( pazhaya paper kadai ). One year, and counting

Today I complete a year of walking daily, and tracking 10k steps. For some, this is not a big deal. It is, for me. For me it is affirmation that I am capable of prioritizing self-care. It is confidence that I can start something and stick with it. It is courage that I can overcome obstacles and figure my way out. It is pride that I inspire/guilt/shame others into taking care of their health.  The odds are stacked against me. I work a full-time job, a somewhat stressful one at that, and I work hard at it. I had just moved countries, from a cushy life of having a cook - maid - car cleaner plus a myriad of time and labor-saving apps, to a country where we have to cook, clean, shop, drive, and do everything in between. Of award-winning books and movies

Read that Midnight's Children wins 'Best of the Booker' . Don't know what to think - either I am stupid to not appreciate the ramble of Salman Rushdie, or the poll is made up, or God forbid, it is a problem with all Booker-winning books (if this one were the best, I shudder to think of the rest). I was always of the opinion that one should avoid (like the plague) award winning books and movies. This opinion started with the Sunday afternoon regional language feature films (national award winning feature films) screened on Doordarshan. I do remember one particular movie that I watched when in school. The movie opened with a dark shot of a porch (its called a mitham in Tamil) in a rural Tamil house.
